Massage Movements Briefly Explained

All hands-on therapies use physical contact as the primary modality. Indeed, it is theis caring human contact that makes massage therapy unique. Here are the following movements briefly explained;
  • Gliding is the practive of gliding the hands or forearm over some portion of the body with varying amounts of pressure or contact according to desired results.
  • Kneading lifts, squeeze, and presses the muscle tissues.
  • Friction refers to a number of massage strokes designed to manipulate soft tissue in such a way that one layer of tissue is moved over or against another.
  • Vibration is a continuous trembling or shaking movements delivered by either the practitioner's hand or an electrical apparatus. Vibration may be classified as a type of friction
  • Percussion is a rapid striking motion of the practitioner's hands against the surface of the body, using varying amounts of force and hand positions.
